"Castros" in Galicia

pastorenglish — 2007-03-13 GTM 1 @ 22:18

A Castro is a kind of very common and ancient hamlet in Galicia. They were built on the top of hills, by rivers or by the sea. So they were easy defending. They use to be protected by a deep ditches or moats. The organization of this castros was like very small towns with their houses, their streets, common services, water tanks…The round houses were made of stone, with a wooden door and a conical roof made of straw. The animals live in the houses with the people. That was their heating system. Many of these castros are in very good condition nowadays. Some of them have been restored.

You can see some photos of some of them.Santa Tegra is a very important one.

We could see a group of nuns with a priest, cowgirls, babies, girls in their pyjamas… The winner was the group of nuns.

Some teachers became pirates for a couple of hours. Even Captain Hook came around.

Carnival

pastorenglish — 2007-02-14 GTM 1 @ 17:50

Carnival is a Pagan celebration. This year, we celebrate on February 20th.
It is a party that is celebrated in many countries. Many people go to
the party in costume fancy dress.carnival3.jpg

People make different dresses and masks.

It is happy , noisy and festive time. People go out to the streets, especially, at the city centre.

There are many fancy parades and groups in the streets and a lot of people watch them.

The typical food at carnival are ham and turnip tops (it is not the usual ham. It is the foreleg of the pork)and, for dessert, waffles and somehting we call "ears" because of their shape.

In my city, they play comedies in the teatre. I go with my family every year. It's a social satire and funny.
